Best Dry Spice Rub for Chicken, Beef and Pork

I recently shared a jar of what I consider the Best Dry Spice Rum with a friend and she called begging me for the recipe. Seriously it’s the people closest to me that totally forget I have a blog with the recipe for almost anything they’ve ever had at my home; funny that, isn’t it?

Still, I went online, grabbed the URL and sent it to her and realized it had been four years ago when it was originally published, when I was working in my daughter’s condo waiting for my new home to be finished, I knew it was time for an update!

My original post was about redoing the kitchen in my daughter’s condo here in Colorado and I thought it time for a quick edit or two. In those four years she has moved to North Carolina, met a guy, fallen in love, married and moved with him to South Carolina…maybe the story of her condo could be nixed? Yeah, I thought so too.

I do recall that we made her a cool spice rack for over her sink where she wanted a jar of this Dry Spice Rub for Chicken, Beef and Pork prominently displayed. Sounds good to me; this rub is like art when first made (use it enough and not so much!).

I also talked about the new home that I had just purchased. This is the photo I took of the model. Mine looks NOTHING like this but still…I love this home. I love where it’s located and I’ve grown to love many of my neighbors and their kids.

The room to the right of the kitchen is what I use for my photo studio instead of a dining room; the convenience can’t be overstated. I might not be as lovely as a formal dining room but it is used every day and that matters more! I really love that I’m almost done with the huge work to get a landscape in place and can spend more time on the inside.

I STILL don’t have a tile backsplash in the kitchen or curtains hung in the kitchen or great room! Maybe this winter? Then maybe I’ll do a similar photo!

Speaking of spices? I actually keep mine in this Elfa rolling cart next to the kitchen island. I used it in my older home and never really expected to here but it got wheeled inside, it fit and today I can not imagine not having it.

I have enough cabinets but not enough drawers and it’s been invaluable for spices, kitchen towels and cake pans. Container Store (totally unsolicited praise) always comes to my rescue!

I honestly don’t mess with a lot of variations on spice rubs for my grilled foods; I think this one is so good that while I’ll concentrate on developing a new sauce, this Best Dry Spice Rub goes on everything I put onto my grill or into my smoker.

It’s a great blend of spices but I think the secret is the brown sugar…but then I think everything is better with brown sugar! I recently smoked an 11 pound turkey and it was amazing with this rub and a honey, bourbon and roasted pecan glaze that I first made for a deep fried turkey.

As a bonus? This makes a great holiday gift; it’s been so popular with friends that I get hints that they wouldn’t mind more. It’s easy too…so we all come out winners!

Some Oldies but Goodies!

  1. I am wondering with this recipe will the ingredients and amounts specified above be enough to adequately fill a little 8oz mason jar as a christmas gift for my co worker? I have at least 4 people (up to 7 or 8) I wanna make a gift for christmas for and I thought a spice rub might be a great gift. Any comments and advice welcomed!

    1. Pam, most rubs that I would make would include a spicy component. Why don’t you try this one and just eliminate the ones you can’t tolerate; most notably the chili powder and cayenne pepper. You could always add a dried herb to the mix too to make up for that lack of spice. Try rosemary, oregano or chives; all three would work fine with the other ingredientsl.

    1. Thanks Melanie…it just seems to work on everything we grill…hmm, maybe I should try it on corn!

  2. Congrats on the faucets – I’ll file that one away till my daughters grow up!

I love the spice rub – the component ingredients, but also that its layered! And Brown sugar is a great thing!

  3. I’m so happy for you Barb. How wonderful (and exciting) that you found a new build that seems to fit you perfectly. Best wishes for it all to be completed on time. Emily must be excited as well over the changes she is planning for her kitchen. I love those jars and this spice rub sounds (and looks wonderful) both in the jars and on the chicken.
Love that Delta is providing you with a new faucet for your new kitchen. Their line is not only beautiful but oh so functional!

  4. I can’t wait to wash my hands under your new faucet in your new kitchen before we have one of these chickens rubbed down with this spice rub on your new patio at the back of your new house. Phew! This looks great. Congratulations on your new home. It is gorgeous!

  5. The faucet was practically the hardest choice I made in my massive kitchen remodel. It’s so definitive of everything you are trying to do in a kitchen’s style. GREG

    1. It helped we were looking at one brand I’m sure and we did go through their online interactive quiz and they were right on with both of us…we LOVED the faucet that was suggested. Now feeling lucky…hoping for me all the choices regarding cabinets and countertops will be as easy!

  6. I like that faucet! I did laugh at matching faucets and all my spices are in a drawer with the names written on top. Even that is a pain in the bahind.

I like the layers in the spice jar but I couldn’t help myself – it would be like bubblewrap. I’d have to shake it.

    1. It was not easy transporting it…I did NOT want the layers to start mixing up…but now, well, I could not resist either. All done. 🙂

  7. Wow what a great spice rub! And so easy! I have to throw this together…. The chicken looks great! And oooh I need a new faucet. We hate ours. Lucky you guys!

    1. Thanks Kiran…and there will be more but I need to take my good camera with me and do a thorough job. Like getting a photo of the concrete basement which is all that is currently complete right now!

    1. I love it too…we really do use it on everything; burgers, pork chops, that turkey. I ran out and food was bleh without it!

    1. I hate the wait; days seem to drag on too slowly I want my own place SO bad. I never realized how much I love/need alone time til I moved in with other people. I vant to be alone!! 🙂

  8. That spice rub looks good!!! The Chicken makes my mouth water. I have always wanted one of those touchless faucets. It would make life in the kitchen so much easier.

    1. It’s just been the perfect blend…not sweet, not too hot…I would have to say ‘just right.’

  9. Congratulations on all the kitchen “newness.” We are getting ready for a total redo on our home, and there are so many thing sto choose, selections to make. Wow, is all I can say. That is one gorgeous faucet.
