Tequila, Kahlua, and Cream in Highball Glass Rimmed with Cocoa and Sugar Crystals

I’ll be honest, Halloween is not a favorite holiday. Christmas ranks Number One; with all the color and sparkle and good cheer. Halloween with its dark, scary and more sinister presence has always sort of unnerved me. I NEED this Tequila, Kahlua, and Cream Cocktail!

I also don’t love scary movies; so my non-scary thing isn’t just about Halloween. Life is scary enough for me!

When my children were small I was the type that made them costumes of felt fashioned to look like strawberries and watermelon and over the years we also had unicorns and Betsy Ross and a long list of handmade outfits but never a witch or a goblin or anything scary.

Now they are grown and about as scary as I get are drinks like this Tequila, Kahlua, and Cream Cocktail. It really hits the spot on the night of witches and goblins. I thought of calling it the Black Goblin but it shouldn’t be relegated to just one scary night.

I was sure that my move six years ago would see me finally hang up the Halloween flag and hunker down in a quiet, dark house so I wouldn’t be bothered.

And then the kids on this block happened and I adore them all and there is no way in this world that I can’t be present for their big night. And to top it off?

I even have a witch costume…how I’ve grown huh? A couple of years ago I was invited to a costume party so I made a Professor McGonagell costume. I made a black velvet cape and bought this witch hat and I’ve sat on the front porch bench and welcomed a bazillion kiddos with that getup. And loved doing it too.

This year will be different; I have no idea what to expect. I know that I’ve certainly hunkered down…but every day, not just on Halloween.

I do have to be careful and have not exactly figured out what that will mean…but I know it won’t mean a bunch of kids coming up to me on my porch to grab some candy and I will miss that.

I saw the cutest setup the other day; a woodworker made a ghost fly from his porch to the sidewalk with both candy and beverages for revelers. I love it but I’m not this industrious!

I think my plan is simple, I’m buying regular big candy bars for my kiddos, none of those miniatures. I’ll let them know to come pick them up, we’ll share niceties from afar, and then I’ll go inside, get all bundled up and enjoy my new favorite cocktail!

One cocktail I’ve long associated with after dinner sipping has been a White Russian, typically made with half and half, coffee liqueur and vodka. It’s also the first cocktail I ever made for both of my girls once they were old enough to join me. It’s cool, sweet and like a mini coffee drink but with a little kick from vodka.

I wondered how it might be with a bit of a stronger kick. Not unlike my journey from removing jalapenos in dishes served at local restaurants to loving them today, I’ve re-discovered tequila after too many bad margaritas. In more than one situation I’ve found that a touch of tequila is far more appealing than the blandness of vodka.

I even added it to the my quintessential favorite, the French Silk Pie, and it was a revelation. Now more of a Mexican Hot Chocolate Pie. Amazing I tell ya!

Tequila, Kahlua, and Cream is a Great Cocktail Served for Halloween!

Not that I haven’t experimented with other warm tequila drinks but I wanted something simple; maybe with those candy bars I’ll provide a tipple for my friends too.

A Thermos filled with this elixir waiting for any friend as they traipse over with their kiddos. Just enough for a sip from prepared small cups; you know to warm them on the long journey home. Across the street.

In preparation for this post, I invited my neighbor Amy over to share this cocktail with me. Amy was also my model for this event and I was lucky that her day rate was simply the cocktail in the photo. I can do that!

Through the magic of a long lens, we actually practiced social distancing and truth be told, knowing her family is practicing the same good habits I do so it made that decision easier.

I MISS PEOPLE!!! Oh did I just yell that. But I do; sometimes a cocktail with a friend is a life necessity!

Funny, I actually anticipated some hesitation from her at the notion of using tequila in a cocktail with cream and coffee liqueur but she was delighted and LOVED the idea and we both sipped away and had a great time. With our witch hats on no less!

Tequila, Kahlua, and Cream Cocktail in a Highball Glass with an Orange Straw

Take a leap of faith and trust me on this one…I’m betting that once you try it, vodka will take a backseat and tequila will help this be your new after dinner favorite too!

This is a great winter warmer; sure, it’s fun for Halloween but it really should not be limited to one day, it’s great all season long!

  1. 5 stars
It was really good, it smells like its going to bite, but the taste is really nice.
We named this one the “mexican russian”, because it said it was like a mexican twist on the white russian.
    Good one!

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed it Kam! I also make what I call a Mexican hot chocolate pie and it’s got tequila, cinnamon and cayenne pepper in it and it’s so good but I’m sure it’s because I use a modest amount so it’s got that touch in it without overpowering the senses.

  2. A white russian was the first cocktail my mom made for me when I was old enough to have a drink with her! This black goblin looks great! I will definitely try this – love the idea of swapping in the tequila!

    1. There must be something about those ‘Russian’ drinks that moms think are OK for their grown children! Maybe we think it’s OK because they’re sweet? I can’t imagine offering them an old fashioned! 🙂

  3. I am totally a Halloween person, although this year I’ve been a bit off my game. I think that it might be because my kids are getting to the scary costume ages. I do have one who wants to be Peter Pan though, so at least there is a bright spot. This cocktail sounds like the perfect thing for mum after everyone has gone to bed on Halloween night. We deserve our tricks and treats too!

  4. Halloween doesn’t do much for me, although I always found it loads of fun when I was a kid. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday — loads of food and drink, and no pressure to send cards, buy gifts, or decorate. Anyway, great looking drink. Haven’t tried Hornitos — probably should someday. Thanks!
