Honey Maple Dark Beer Bread
Honey Maple Dark Beer Bread is a great adaption from a standard beer bread recipe. A little darker and a bit sweeter; it’s a great treat for breakfast.
I have a recipe I’m dying to make for homemade hamburger buns and I hope to get them done this week but I have yet to find the time to devote to that effort. Maybe when it’s colder and I’m stuck inside but right now we’re having some beautiful fall days and I’m craving both the outdoors and homemade bread, especially this Honey Maple Dark Beer Bread.
I’m not a beer drinker. I like wine and cocktails but have never learned to appreciate beer. That changed a bit when I was invited to a beer tasting a couple of years ago and discovered that pairing the right foods and beers was as magical as it can be when discovering a successful wine pairing.
Most surprising to me though? How much I enjoyed dark beer. I still don’t drink a lot of beer but on the occasion that we’re having burgers on the grill; it might make its appearance and I’m slowly but surely becoming a real fan.
So it was only a matter of time before I would take my original Coors Beer Bread recipe and go over to the dark side.
The addition of sugars with more pronounced flavors than white granulated sugar sealed the deal and the literal icing on the cake was my favorite cherry jam. Seriously I could have eaten half a loaf. But I stopped before I got there. I think.
For this version I used the Nitro Milk Stout from Left Hand Brewing in Longmont, Colorado. Colorado has become a leader in the craft beer industry so I wanted to focus on finding something local that I could use for both this project and for old fashioned drinking.
This was the perfect fit! With an aroma of brown sugar and vanilla cream and hints of roasted coffee it sounded like it was made for baking and it brought a sweetness to the finished bread. I also enjoyed one the other night not in bread. Chocolate? Why yes there is. Loved this little beer!
I’m also totally in love with the products I received from Mohawk Trading Company a few months ago. Their honey and maple syrup are both divine so I decided to not choose and just used both and it worked beautifully; especially with the darker beer.
If you’ve never tried beer bread; you must make this one. It’s easy and it’s good. What more can you ask for right?

Honey Maple Dark Beer Bread
Ingredients
- ½ cup butter melted (divided)
- 1 tablespoon molasses
- ¼ cup honey
- ¼ cup maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 12 ounces dark beer I used Nitro Milk Stout
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375F.
- Pour half of the butter into a 9X5-inch loaf pan and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl combine molasses, honey, syrup and cinnamon and stir to combine.
- Combine flour, salt and baking powder and whisk to combine. Add to bowl with moist ingredients and mix just until blended. Add the beer and stir to combine.
- Turn the batter out into prepared pan and smooth the top lightly.
- Pour the remainder of the butter over the top of the mixture in the loaf pan.
- Bake for 40 minutes or until top has risen and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow bread to cool in pan for 15 minutes; remove it from pan and let it cool completely on a wire rack.Cut with a serrated knife.
- Great with butter and jam or honey or cream cheese.
Could you add mix-ins to this? Like chocolate chips or nuts? Or do you think that would cause problems?

This bread is so delicious! I thought it would be quite a bit sweeter, but it is still SO GOOD and so easy! Will definitely make again!
I’m so glad you liked it Hailey! It is a bit sweeter than regular beer bread but I didn’t mean for that to mean that it was actually really sweet. But hey you can always put some honey on it if you want. ?
It looked like a fab recipe, and I had some chocolate stout that was in need of a recipe. I have everything out tonight, but in going thru the recipe I have a question. The list of ingredients does not list nutmeg, but it is there, in the instructions. I’m going to give it a guess that it needs a quarter of a teaspoon, and just go with that. You may wish to edit the recipe. Will let you know what my neighbor thinks, as I’m baking it for a gratitude gift!
Oh shoot…I think I tried it both ways and my daughter isn’t fond of nutmeg (what?) so I left it out and forgot to eliminate it from the instructions I had written. It will be great with or without…if you like nutmeg!
My dad always makes fun of me when I make homemade hamburger buns. He’s all “they are so cheap, why do you bother spending the effort in making them yourself?” I still do anyways :p

What a great bread! Love the combo of flavors and being one that loves beer, but stays away because of the calories, this is one good way to get that great flavor. Love those candles, too. What a great gift those would all be for someone. Don’t know where that video came from, but Zoe did a color run in Philly. Man oh man, they come out looking tie dyed. It was a lot of fun to see them all!

I really like baking with dark beer– Left hand brewing Company’s stout is my choice too! Now we are up to two beers that I could share with you at a moment’s notice. I’ll leave the liquor to you but you can believe that with an English husband we have plenty of lager and stout at home. Your bread looks great!
I have decided that I need to keep a few beers in the house; I actually enjoy these dark beers! I could learn something about beer from your hubs; it’s definitely new territory for me.
