Le Peep Gooey Buns
Le Peep Gooey Buns are a favorite treat when we venture out for breakfast. So easy to make too; bet you’ll love them as much as we do!
I’ve never been one to eat out often; I guess I love to cook and feed my family and friends too much. Well, except breakfast…my kids loved to go out and quite often Le Peep was our breakfast destination and Gooey Buns were a favorite choice.
Am I the only mom who wants just one more day with their darling little children? Not everyday but just ONE! 🙂
As I segued into food blogging full-time it did bring a lot of opportunities; restaurants always wanted a food blogger group I started to come try out their best dishes (and hoping we would compliment them on social media!).
Covid sure put the kibosh to those activities but truth be told I got a LOT done in my home; decorating, landscaping, and building a deck. Yes hard labor helped me survive that time and make lemonade from a LOT of lemons!
Now that things have opened up again, one fun outing happened recently when I met a group of friends and we sought out a Le Peep Restaurant near us. Everyone had good memories and something they had to have again. No one had invited us to the establishment so I can brag because I love the place!
You can guess one of my favorites, right? Of course it was these Gooey Buns.
When eating at the restaurant I usually ordered a side of their Sassy Apples too. If you find that appealing, I’ve put the ingredients into a Note after the recipes; the ingredients are listed and you simply combine and sauté for 15 minutes to soften and they are served on the side.
I thought Le Peep was a nationwide chain but only recently discovered that it’s only found in scattered states. Now that we’ve been re-introduced, it’s back to being a favorite place to meet friends for a morning rendezvous and I simply love the breakfast offerings. Eggs Benedict or a Huevos Rancheros or at least these Gooey Buns!
Know that while they might call them Gooey Buns they’re really Gooey Muffins. These are easier to make than Eggs Benedict though; all you need are a couple of ingredients you probably already have in your pantry:
- English Muffins
- Butter
- Brown Sugar
- Cinnamon
- Almonds
- Cream Cheese
The English muffins are topped with a cinnamon, sugar, and butter mixture that is broiled and then topped with slivered almonds for the last couple of minutes under the broiler. Simple right? And simply divine.
Served with cream cheese and the Sassy Apples on the side, I think they’re the perfect breakfast treat with a nice mixture of both sweet, spicy cinnamon, and a bit of tang from the cream cheese.
I didn’t make the apples when I made these buns; I had some great Honey Crisp apples and slices of those were perfect too if you want even easier.
I actually planned a post about these favorite muffins before I moved here a decade ago. I made them, I photographed them…and that was the end of it. I was sort of at my wits end living in someone else’s home while waiting for this one to be completed and it showed.
I’m glad I was reminded of them through a new adventure and even happier to make them at home again. They are still the easiest, best warm treat for a quick but delicious breakfast.
Best of all though is they are one more reason for me to stay home and make something in my own kitchen and invite the neighbors over! I know you’ll love them too!

- ¼ cup sliced almonds
- 4 oz cream cheese
Instructions
- Turn oven on to broil.
- Split English muffins and lay them open on your baking sheet.

- Place cookie sheet on the middle rack in your oven and broil for about 2 minutes watching closely.
- Remove from oven and sprinkle with the slivered almonds.
- Place them back under the broiler to toast the almonds; watch CLOSELY; should take about a minute to brown the almonds.

Notes
- 2 cooking apples, peeled cored and cut into bite size chunks (use a firm apple that will hold up…in other words, NOT a red delicious)
- 1 Tbsp butter
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- Combine the apples, butter and cinnamon in a small pan on medium heat; cook until the apple chunks have started to soften; approximately 15 minutes.
- Remove from heat and set aside to cool a bit; serve on the side of the Gooey Buns.
The cake you share is delicious and nutritious. I really like the food you share. with fatty and fragrant peanuts. I really like this dish.
Good to see this one reappear! Such a good recipe, Wow, just putting the finishing touches on your new house after 5 years? That’s a long time, of course, but I’ll bet you’ve had a lot of pleasure along the way. Plus, at least for me, I have to live in a place for some time before I have any idea what I want/need to do. Bet you own’t want to move again for years and years!
Well I moved here thinking I would be OK with the builder’s landscaper; what was I thinking? The builder’s landscaping was the same plants, every other house and they weren’t much. I’ve moved literally tons of rock and planted at least 50 trees, bushes and perennials plus put in a veggie garden and a raised herb garden. Then I always had great plans for the winter to get more done inside…but for several reasons that didn’t happen. My main living area has been good; it’s my bedroom and office that suddenly needed me. I actually had not changed the look in my bedroom for at least 15 years…and now it means painting furniture to get it done! The office is almost there; one more lamp and a chair and I’ll be good and it’s bright and cheery and far more conducive to working than a kitchen table was. 🙂
I had to give away my office furniture when I moved; no room to store it and the table worked but one day it just didn’t. I’ll show some photos soon when I’m done…and then this winter it’s on to the basement!
I think we do take for granted a bit all the personal touches we put into a home when we live there and trust me John…they’ll be carting my dead body out of this one. NEVER again! 🙂
Oh my goodness these are the most on point gooey buns!! I used to work at Le Peep and I feel like I’m back there again. Thank you for the recipe so I can enjoy them at home!
Thanks so much for letting me know Mandy. It is so funny…I just noticed them the other day and thought they desperately need a new photo. Soon, very soon!
Sooo yummy! I’m from Austin and I’m always craving these gooey buns I had in Houston! So glad I can make them at home now- tastes just like the real thing
You had me at gooey, ha ha ha!!! Would you believe we have a Le Peep two miles from our home, and yet we have never been there….crazy! Your recipe looks so good, what a perfect breakfast choice:-) Hugs, Terra
I’ve been to Le Peep, but I’ve yet to try these delicious buns! They look outstanding! Like you, I don’t eat out very often, and I love recreating recipes at home. Thank you for sharing this with us. Too good!
I’m all about these gooey buns. All about em!
These are utterly brilliant Barb – sometimes cinnamon rolls or sticky buns are just too much for me in the morning but these look just right! Glad you are “bunking” in with some friends – I know it will seem strange but it sounds perfect for you right now… hope all is well!!!
These buns look irresistible, I love the side of apples!
B, we have Le Peep…I think, 2 or 3 locations here in Indy. Very charming little place for brekkie with truly good service. Thanks for sharing your recipe and good luck with the move! xo
I do love Le Peep. It’s a nice place to enjoy a good breakfast. Like Karen, I have never had these at le Peep. I don’t know why!! But now I know who makes them better 😀
I hope your move goes well! These look really tasty, the apples are so good this time of year too.
Moving is such a pain! Although it gives you an opportunity to get rid of stuff. The longest we’ve ever lived in one house is 11 years. Every time we’ve moved we’ve given away or thrown away quite a bit. But we still have too much! So I sure can understand your pain. We’ve always packed our own boxes, so I’ve gotten pretty good at packing dishes and kitchen stuff – something that in the past could take a couple of days because we had so much). Anyway, good luck with things. We don’t have Le Peep, but those gooey buns really look delish. Thanks for recreating the dish for us!
Wow, I’ve never had these at Le Peep and now I am really wondering why. They look outstanding and so easy. I’ll be trying these soon.
Good luck with the move. things always have a way of working out and how nice to be with friends. It’s been a longtime since I’ve eaten at Le Peep but when I do, I get these. I’ve recreated them, too and once i sent my kids out the door with them. In that case one of them ended up with a burnt mouth! So i learned to wait until they cool!
I’ve never heard of “Le Peep,” but I’m so glad you have one nearby so that you could share this wonderful recipe with all of us! What a simple, delicious recipe this is. I think all I’d need alongside is a good, strong cup of coffee.
I’m hoping the moving/relocating is going well. With everything you have going on right now, it’s completely amazing that you have time to blog!
Unfortunately, i don’t have one here… but thankfully I have this amazing recipe to work with! What a way to start the day!
Thanks for sharing this recipe. These gooey muffins are something I would have never thought to make but after seeing your photos I can hardly wait to try them! Love those apples chunks and cinnamon.
Hoping the final stages of this move goes smoothly for you and that you do find some respite at your friend Karen’s for a few months.
Keep looking forward to the future. When you find your new home the move into it will be a much happier experience than having to leave this one and your beautiful gardens. To new beginnings Barb 🙂
