Bourbon Hot Chocolate
Need some warming up this winter? Hot chocolate has always been a favorite but this time, try making this Bourbon Hot Chocolate with Toasted Meringues or Marshmallows. It’s as simple as adding bourbon and topping with either one; it’s divine!
I really wanted to get this post for Bourbon Hot Chocolate published for Friday Cocktails the other day but, well, that did not happen did it? I have been so busy this past week creating so many things in my kitchen that I did not get to this wonderful libation earlier in the week.
When I got up Friday morning and went into the kitchen to make coffee with the best of intentions to do this first thing…well, I was met with a sink full of dishes to wash and a dishwasher filled with clean dishes that I had sort of forgotten about; maybe also sort of hoping they would disappear?
By the time I got my poor kitchen back into order I had lost much of the day. It happens; a lot it seems lately. I could have promised this delectable treat yesterday but I’m like everyone else.
We clamor for the weekend as if something fantastic awaits us and then a day running to the dry cleaners and the pet store and Costco. Tell me, why do I go to Costco on Saturday when I could leave my studio in the middle of the week and shop there? Years of habit I presume and a trick this old dog really should be learning after years of working from a home office!
So while my original intent was to publish this recipe earlier for Bourbon Hot Chocolate with Toasted Meringues to maybe add to your viewing pleasure tonight during the Olympics 2018 Closing Ceremonies, I think there is still plenty of time.
This is really simple and just four basic ingredients most people have on hand. Even if my ‘on hand’ meant only having 1.5 cups of milk in the fridge and having to use some some half and half for the other 1/2 cup. I’m not gonna lie; you could do the same, it was SO good!
I had made those adorable meringues toppers with some leftover egg whites and used my fancy kitchen torch to brown them up a bit. They were perfectly adorable but you know what? When I ran out of meringues I simply put some marshmallows on top and browned them with the torch and they weren’t just an OK substitute, I think they were just as good; some of my drinkers thought even better!
Unless cute is on your agenda too, the slightly burned marshmallows coated with some of the bourbon hot chocolate were AMAZING! I’ve now added notes to my calendar giving myself firm instructions to make a dessert treat with bourbon and chocolate and charred marshmallows.
Make sure you have a whole bag; yes we did keep dunking them and torching them all the way to the bottom of the mugs. So delicious.
Do you like watching the Olympics too? I simply love the Winter Olympics; maybe because I’ve tried some of those skills and know how hard they are to do. It always amazes that people do flips and throws and jumps on ice when I was lucky to get around a rink without falling and I was just trying to skate forward.
Skiing? Scared me so much I just couldn’t do it and then I see Lindsey Vonn barreling down a hill as fast as I drive on the highway and I’m in awe of the skill and courage she and others have. Curling? Well it’s good for a laugh right?
This year I think the darling of the Olympics for Coloradans was seventeen year old Red Gerard in the slopestyle snowboarding competition. I was having a difficult night sleeping so turned on the television at 2am for a bit. I remember when I perked up a bit when I heard Red’s name and hometown of Silverthorne, CO.
Hold on, could that be…the brother of another Colorado food blogger? Yes, it could; his sister Tieghan Gerard makes crazy good food with beautiful photos at Half Baked Harvest! It was a happy, exciting moment and if you’re so inclined take a look at his run. Honestly, I’m brave in other ways but I am amazed at these young people!
So if you’re going to be watching the end of the games with me tonight or have any other viewing party or friendly get together coming up soon; try this Bourbon Hot Chocolate with Torched Meringues or Marshmallows. It’s warm, inviting and pretty much the perfect libation for a winter afternoon or evening with friends. Cheers!

Bourbon hot chocolate sounds like a terrific idea! With either meringues or marshmallows as garnish — I don’t care, just as long as I get to use my kitchen torch. Although mine isn’t fancy — I got it in the plumbing department of a big box home improvement store. 🙂 Anyway, good stuff — thanks.
